Homeowners who are behind in their mortgage, or are in danger of facing foreclosure, can receive free or low cost pre-foreclosure counseling from the federal government.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has certified a number of agencies nationwide to assist homeowners that may be facing foreclosure. HUD is a federal agency committed to increasing homeownership opportunities and assisting individuals and families in need. HUD-approved agencies will counsel homeowners to assist them in finding alternatives to foreclosure. Homeowners facing foreclosure due to a loss of a job, an increase in mortgage payments, or other unexpected circumstances, are encouraged to seek counseling services.

9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time). Homeowners can also receive automated referral information that will identify the three counseling agencies located closest to their location.
